Step Back In Time Tour

Papafragas volcanic pool – Sarakiniko – Catacombs – Plaka

We start our tour to the volcanic island of Milos with a visit at Papafragas which is a volcanic “swimming pool”, a cluster of deep-sea inlets and sea caves. The ancient town of Phylakope (9000 to 4000 BC approx.) was discovered here, the few remaining ruins of walls, buildings and tombs are now almost entirely covered by the water, but still bear witness of the life and civilization existing there during the Neolithic period.
A short drive, take us to Sarakiniko, an inlet of pure white rock formations sculpted by volcanic eruptions. The most beautiful beache of Milos and surely the most particular one. The entire landscape formed by the volcanic rocks doesn’t show any signs of vegetation and is colored entirely in a bright white, which makes an interesting contrast with the deep blue and turquoise of the surrounding waters. This amazing scenery gives one the impression of standing on the surface of the moon.
Then, we continue our tour along the northern coast towards the picturesque Plaka town and its cobbles streets and alleys. Plaka is the classic cycladic “Chora” (the capital of the island) with white stone houses anf bougainvillea flowers.  We’ll walk through the village to admire its traditional architecture and its stunning view of the sea from the veranda of Panagia Korfiatissa church.
We continue our tour to the outskirts of Trypiti, where the Catacombs are located. A sacred place for early Christianity, a Necropolis and resting place of approx. 2,500 souls. Close to the Catacombs is situated the marble Roman Amphitheater. It is nestled on a hill, facing the Southside of the island, the acoustics and the views over Milos Bay are perfect. The Roman theater dates back to the Hellenistic period in 3rd century BC. It was destroyed during Roman times and rebuilt out of marble. On the way to the amphitheater, keep an eye out of the signpost showing where the “Aphrodite of Milos” statue was found. Also known as “Venus of Milos,” the famous statue now resides at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
