Athens – Delphi – Nafpaktos – Ioannina – Kalampaka – Volos

 

DAY 1: Welcome to Athens

Welcome to Greece! The birthplace of Western civilization! Upon your arrival in Athens, you will be met by our representative and transfer to the hotel. Your adventure in the historic city of Athens has begun!

Enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour of Athens, including a visit to the Acropolis with the famous Temple of Parthenon and the magnificent museum. Also enjoy a panoramic tour of the city highlights. You can stroll through the streets of Plaka, known as the “Neighborhood of the Gods”, built on top of the residential areas of the ancient city. Cafes, restaurants and shops invite you to partake in the sumptuous culture that is found in a variety of forms around the streets of Athens! (Dinner)

 

DAY 2: ATHENS –  OSIOS LOUKAS MONASTERY – DELPHI

Depart from Athens by bus driving through the fertile plain of Boeotia. Our first stop will be at the 11th century Byzantine Monastery, Ossios Loukas, one of the greatest buildings in medieval Greece. See its stunning domed churches and mosaics. Continue through the town of Arachova famous for the colorful woolen rugs “flokati”, to visit the archaeological site at Delphi. Priestess Pythia pronounced her famous oracles in the Temple of Apollo. Visit the archaeological museum next to the site containing masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture such as the bronze Charioteer and the famous athlete Aghias.  Overnight in Delphi. DAY 3: DELPHI – GALAXIDI – NAFPAKTOS

After breakfast, we will departure for the popular town of Galaxidi in Central Greece. Considered one of the most picturesque destinations in Greece, it is by the sea of the Corinthian Gulf and surrounded by mountains. Galaxidi features a lovely waterfront, beautiful traditional architecture and a pretty harbor. Galaxidi not only has succeeded to maintain its authentic character and charm but also it is one of Greece’s most beautiful beach towns. In the late afternoon, we will take the road toward to the beautiful beach town of Nafpaktos.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

 

DAY 4: NAFPAKTOS – IOANNINA

After breakfast, we will explore Nafpaktos, one of Greece’s most beautiful beach towns, located on a bay on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth. It will charm you with its traditional character, peaceful atmosphere and lush green landscape. The city is blessed with a rich and an interesting history: the Battle of Lepanto took place here. The greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the most famous Spanish writers, Miguel de Cervantes fought in the Battle of Lepanto and you will see a statue in his honor. His novel Don Quixote is the most-translated book in the world, after the Bible. It is considered the best work of fiction ever written. The picturesque port, the lovely castle built on the top of the hill offering great panoramic views of the majestic Ionian Sea and the blue flag beaches provide the main attraction and offers incredible views of the Gulf of Corinth.

After lunch, we depart for Ioannina Through the stunning new motorway of Ionia Odos. Early evening arriving at our hotel in Ioannina. (Breakfast, Dinner)

 

DAY 5: IOANNINA – DODONI – IOANNINA

After breakfast we will explore the city of Ioannina, the Epirus’ capital and a charming city that is rich in attractions and museums. We will start with a nice stroll around the historic centre, touched by plenty of cultures and with Christian, Muslim and Jewish influences. One of the most notable attractions of Ioannina is the islet on Lake Pamvotis. The island is known as “Nissaki”. We will visit the monastery of Agios Panteleimon which has been transformed into a museum and where Ali Pasha spent the last days of his life waiting for a pardon from the Sultan. Then, we will head to the fascinating museums that lie within the Castle of Ioannina, built in 528 AD. It is the oldest Byzantine fortress in the country. The National Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, Ioannina castle located in the city center, the Fethiye Mosque, whose final form was given by Ali Pasha in 1795. The Aslan Pasha Mosque and the historic center of Ioannina among others.

Later, we will drive toward to the site of Dodoni, which is located in a narrow valley at the foot of Mount Tomaros. This ancient city was a major site of religious importance for Ancient Greece. It was mostly known for its oracle, which is the oldest Hellenic oracle in the country. The theatre of Dodona, built in the early 3rd c. BC, is currently in the UNESCO Tentative List. It is one of the largest theatres in Greece, with a capacity of approximately 15,000-17,000 spectators. After visit the archaeological site with its Acropolis, the theatre and the stadium we will return to our hotel in Ioannina in the early evening. (Breakfast, Dinner)

 

DAY 6: IOANNINA – METSOVO – KALAMBAKA

Morning departure to Kalabaka, passing through the village of Metsovo (50 km), best known for its traditional architecture, churches, restored mansions and famous for its wine and cheese. We’ll enjoy the lovely Metsovo, a scenic mountain village in the north western Greece and we will take a walk in the cobbled streets and visit the famous Katogi Averoff Winery, which makes some of Greece’s most celebrated wines.  There, you’ll enjoy a tour “a unique, rich initiation into the world of wine, the rich history of Katogi and its winemaking process” and an awesome wine tasting experience in the cool ambiance of the cellars.

After lunch we will continue to Kalabaka and Meteora monasteries. Arrival in Kalabaka in the late afternoon. Time permitted visit one or two of the six monasteries still in use. Enjoy a unique and imposive scenery of ageless monasteries, containing priceless historical and religious treasures, standing between Earth and Sky atop huge rocks. We are going to visit the first great monastery of Varlaam, founded on the 16th century and located on the top of a rock at 380m height! Our second visit will be at the Monastery of St. Stephan, of the 15th century, also built on the top of the top of another huge rock where you will admire a small treasure of Byzantine and Christian items at the museum inside the monastery! Dinner and overnight in Kalabaka. (Breakfast, dinner)

 

DAY 7: KALABAKA – TRIKALA – LARISA – VOLOS

Morning departure to visit another two monasteries still in use, before continue our journey to Volos passing through the towns of Trikala and Larisa, which is one of the main centers of agriculture. Arrival in Volos in the afternoon. Enjoy your evening at leisure to one of the largest and most attractive cities in Greece as well as one of the country’s most prominent ports.

The modern-day city, built near the site of ancient Iolcos, dominates the region of Magnesia from its position at the foot of Mount Pelion overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf.Do not forget to endulge in Greek delicacies in the numerous “Tsipouradika”! They are little tavernas offering meze style dishes to accompany the local ‘tsipouro”, a strong distilled spirit, containing 40–45% alcohol by volume and produced from either the pomace (the residue of the wine press) or from the wine after the grapes and juice have been separated. It comes in two types: pure and anise-flavored!  (Breakfast, Dinner)

 

DAY 8: VOLOS – PELION – VOLOS

Breakfast and start our journey to “Pelion area”, the summer habitat of the twelve gods of Olympus and visit Portaria village.a complex of traditional villages. Pelion is a place of indescribable beauty, irresistibly attractive. Mt Pelion allures all the visitors. With a breath-taking view over the endless sea, settlements that are architectural gems, and an ancient culture, it welcomes myriads of visitors every year. Lush vegetation and an extensive network of mountain paths enable the visitor to wander through a bewitching land, still echoing to the legendary Centaurs. It is said that the cave of Centaur Chiron can be found in the village of Milies on Mt Pelion. Early evening, return at our hotel in Volos. (Breakfast, Dinner)

 

DAY 9: VOLOS – THERMOPYLAE – ATHENS

After breakfast, we depart for Athens. We will pass through Thermopylae, where you will admire the statue of Leonidas (short stop for photos), as a memorial of the battle of the 300 Spartans against thousands of Persian soldiers of the Persian Empire. Arrive in Athens in the afternoon.

Rejuvenate yourselves ad follow us to a traditional Greek tavern, in the center of Athens being entertained by live Greek music, under the moonlight! Once you are done, meet your driver for your return transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Athens.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

 

DAY 10: ATHENS – DEPARTURE

Our driver WILL meet you at your hotel to transfer you at Athens airport according to your flight details. (Breakfast)
