Athens – Meteora – Santorini
DAY 1: Welcome to Athens (2 nights)
Arrival in Athens capital of Greece and start your journey for a life-changing experience. Meet and assist at the airport and transfer to the center of the city. On route to your hotel you will have a first glance of the ancient treasures and Christian history of Athens.
DAY 2: ATHENS – EXPLORING THE ANCIENT ACROPOLIS
Accompanied by your private guide, start your day with a tour of the Acropolis — a complex of monuments that symbolize Athens, highlighted by the Parthenon. Conceived in 447 BC and dedicated to the Goddess Athena, it is one of the most important ancient monuments in the Western world. At the foot of the Acropolis Rock, visit the museum and, on its top floor, view the 2,500-year-old frieze created by the legendary sculptor Pheidias — an impressive sequence of carved stone reliefs depicting ancient rituals, sacrifices, athletic contests and musical performances — and then look out on to the majestic Parthenon itself. Enjoy the balance of the day at leisure.
DAY 3: ATHENS – CAPE SOUNION & THE TEMPLE OF POSEIDON
Enjoy your morning at leisure, shop or bargain in the local market. In the late afternoon take a relaxing trip down to the southernmost tip of Mainland Greece to see the fifth century B.C Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Marvel at the sheer rugged beauty of the coastline and the ancient temple perched above a 197-foot drop down to the Aegean Sea below. Stand above the site of the world’s first lighthouse, overlooking an area steeped in classical Greek history, ever since the tragic King Aegeas threw himself from the rocky precipice into the sea below, thereby giving his name to the Aegean Sea. Return at the hotel in the early evening.
DAY 4: ATHENS – DELPHI – METEORA (1 night)
After breakfast, meet your guide and drive through Thebes to Delphi. Tread in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks, who would descend on the sanctuary of Delphi to consult with the most important oracle in the classical world. Join your Local Specialist and walk the Sacred Way to the 4th-century Temple of Apollo. View the statues immortalizing the strength of the athletes who once competed in the Pythian Games, held in honor of Apollo and the Arts.
A scenic afternoon drive brings us to to Kalambaka, a small town situated at the foot of the astonishing complex of Meteora, gigantic rocks.
DAY 5: METEORA – SANTORINI (3 nights)
In the morning, visit two of the marvelous monasteries of Meteora. These monasteries are breathtaking structures sitting atop gray-rock pinnacles jutting over 2km into the Sky (Meteora means “hanging between Heaven and Earth”). Visit two of the four or five monasteries still in use and view the ancient manuscripts, ornate icons and Byzantine Artifacts Return to Athens via Trikala and Lamia with a short stop at Thermopylae to visit Leonida’s Monument. Early evening arrive in Athens Airport and board on your flight to Santorini.
DAY 6: SANTORINI
After breakfast meet your English-speaking guide to start your tour on the villages of Santorini. You will visit the Cliffside villages of Oia and Fira before visit the prehistoric Akrotiri – a Bronze Age settlement destroyed by a huge eruption in the 17th century BC, buried under the volcanic ash, preserving the whole city. It is often referred often as “Prehistoric Pompei”. Upon completion of your tour you will be transferred back to your hotel.
DAY 7: SANTORINI
Enjoy a full day at leisure in this dreamy setting, relaxing and enjoying your hotel’s many amenities and taking in unfettered views of the volcano caldera and the rich blue Aegean Sea.
DAY 8: SANTORINI – ATHENS
Early breakfast at hotel and meet your driver for your transfer to Santorini airport, for your departure flight to Athens.
