DAY 1: Welcome to Athens
Welcome to Greece! The birthplace of Western civilization! Upon your arrival in Athens, you will be met by our representative and transfer to the hotel. Your adventure in the historic city of Athens has begun!
Enjoy an afternoon panoramic sightseeing tour of Athens, including a visit to the Acropolis with the famous Temple of Parthenon and the magnificent museum. Overnight in Athens. (Breakfast, dinner)
DAY 2: ATHENS – CORINTH – MYCENAE – NAFPLIO
Early breakfast and we start our journey to Peloponnese region. Our first stop is at the breathtaking Canal of Corinth, which is 6 km length and 80m height. Continue to the famous ancient town of Mycenae and the Archaeological site – the Lion Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, the Palace and the tomb of Agamemnon. Finally we will arrive at the one of the most beautiful towns of Greece and the first capital city at the modern Greek history, Nauplio. We will visit the Castle of the Town, Palamidi, the famous fortress nestled on the crest of a 216-metre hill and built by the Venetians. To reach the top of the castle there are 999 steps (!) and from there you can enjoy impressive views over the Argolic Guld, the city of Nauplio and the surrounding countryside. Overnight in Nafplio. DAY 3: NAFPLIO – EPIDAURUS – GYTHIO – MONEMVASIA – GYTHIO
Soon after breakfast, we will reach at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, one of the best Ancient Theaters worldwide with amazing acoustic. Continue our journey to the southern Peloponnese and reach the largest and the most beautiful cities of Mani, Gyhtio. We will have time for a walk in the city and admire the dock, at the isle of Kranai, where Paris and the beautiful Eleni spent their first night. Time for lunch.
Continue with a visit to the second famous Tower Town of Peloponnese, Monemvassia, a mystical stone-built settlement, nestled at the edge of a big rock by the sea that was founded by the Byzantines in the sixth century. Peer into the history of the fortress –the so-called “Gibraltar of the East”–, which was occupied by the Byzantines, the Crusaders, the Venetians, and the Turks in the past. Wander around its narrow cobbled streets, the Upper and the Lower part of the town, and admire the beautifully restored stone buildings. Return in Gytheio for overnight. (Breakfast, dinner)
DAY 4: MONEMVASIA – DIROS CAVE – SPARTA
After breakfast, we continue to Monemvasia our journey to the length of the rugged Mani Peninsula, home to pirate communities & its characteristic castle houses. Along the way we stop to explore the main sites of the Peninsula. Arriving to Caves of Diros famous for its marvelous subterranean caves, as a part of an underground river. About 5,000 meters have been exposed and accessible by small boats and through narrow passageways, surrounded by formations of stalagmites and stalactites. Caves have served as places of worship in Paleolithic and Neolithic times and their inhabitant believed that the caves were the entrance to the underworld. Visit of the local museum before continue to Sparta town and overnight. (Breakfast, dinner)
DAY 5: SPARTA – MYSTRAS – ANCIENT OLYMPIA
After breakfast we will first visit the unique Museum of Olive Oil of Sparta, a great Museum showing the unique history of olive production in Greece. We continue to the nearby glory Byzantine town of Mystras. Let yourself be captivated by this destination’s medieval splendour. Wander around the castle city the Upper and the Lower Town, and sense through the silence the city’s sheer grandeur: the Palace of the Despots (Anaktora), the Houses of Laskaris and Frangopoulos, the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Dimitrios and the impressive Monasteries of Our Lady Pantánassa, and of Οur Lady Perivleptos. Then, we will depart to reach at Ancient Olympia. Overnight in Olympia. (Breakfast, dinner)
DAY 6: ANCIENT OLYMPIA – PATRAS
Start early in the morning by visiting the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia, the place that the first ever Olympic Games took place in 776 B.C. Ancient Olympia lies in the lush valley formed by the Alfios river. We will visit the ancient Olympic site, the museum and the ruined remains of the Temple of Zeus and Hera. Although secluded near the west coast of the Peloponnese, Olympia became the most important religious and athletic center in Greece. Leaving Ancient Olympia, we skirt the coastline north to Patras, our home for the night.
Enjoy your evening at leisure. You will have time for yourself and be able to enjoy the city’s vibe to the fullest. Definitely, Patras is a place where entertainment, history and culture mingle together to create a popular destination. Overnight in Patras. (Breakfast, dinner)
DAY 7: PATRAS – COG RAILWAY JOURNEY – KALAVRYTA – CAVE LAKES
Right after breakfast, we will do our sightseeing in and around the city. We will visit the beautiful medieval Castle of Patras, where you will have breathtaking views of the city and the Ionian Sea, and the impressive Cathedral of Saint Andrew, a place of pilgrimage for Christians from all over the world since the relics of the Apostle Saint Andrew and the cross on which he was martyred are kept in a special shrine here and the vast and fascinating Archaeological Museum of Patras, the second-largest museum of Greece, that houses collections about the history of Patras and the surrounding area from prehistory to the end of Roman times, among other sights.
Then we will arrive at Diakofto to take the Cog Railway which links Kalavrita with Diakopto through Vouraikos Canyon; one of the most beautiful natural sights and of the most spectacular railway rides in Greece. It has been mentioned as the most beautiful train trip in Balkans. The little train travels through streams climbing the fantastic narrow gorge up into the mountains, through tunnels, over waterfalls, along cliffs and through forests of pine and oleander. The journey ends at the town of Kalavryta.
Our driver will meet you there to continue the tour at the mysterious, magnificent and unique “Cave of the Lakes”, a rare creation of Nature. Consisted of 13 in total Small and large lakes, with different colors each one, depending on the oxides contained in the rocks. Return at the picturesque village of Kalavrita for overnight. (Breakfast, dinner)
DAY 8: KALAVRYTA – HERAION – LOUTRAKI – ATHENS
Breakfast and depart for Ancient Corinth, where we will visit the Museum of Ancient Corinth, the Archaeological site and the IRAION (Ancient sanctuary) in Perachora. Return in Loutraki cosmopolitan seaside town for lunch, before return to Athens. We return in Athens in the late afternoon ending this wonderful multi-day epic tour. Overnight in Athens. (Breakfast, dinner).
DAY 9: ATHENS
After breakfast, start with a visit at the Synagogue in the Agora of Athens which is an ancient synagogue. The synagogue is thought to date from the period between 267 and 396 CE. Then, you will visit Beth Shalom Synagogue which is the principal synagogue of Athens. Afterwards, you will continue to see the Etz Haim Synagogue which is right across from Beth Shalom. It was built in 1904 by Greek Romaniote Jews who came from Ioannina, and for this reason it is also called the “Romanian” or “Yannonian” synagogue by the oldest members of the community. Continue with a visit to the great Jewish Museum of Greece which was established by Nicholas Stavroulakis in 1977 to preserve the material culture of the Greek Jews.
In the evening you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Athens affair in the picturesque neighborhood of Plaka underneath the rock of Acropolis.
